DC for the Day

When planning our trip, EK mentioned wanting to fit a visit to Washington DC in at some point during our time. She has been reading about and studying DC books for a while now, so she knew exactly what she wanted to do and see. We decided that a double decker bus tour that allowed us to hop on and hop off would be the perfect way to see the city and sights in a short amount of time.

We enjoyed hearing all the historical facts and fun little tidbits from our tour guide!  We got off the bus at the Lincoln Memorial and wandered around for a little bit before catching up with the bus later in the day.

She dances everywhere she goes!
Simply speechless as we read the names on the wall.
Little legs plus lots of walking equal a piggy back ride on mama's back.

The WWII memorial was my favorite. As we walked up to it, we passed several WWII veterans on their Honor Flight trips. It was emotional and moving and so very special. We all just smiled, nodded and said "thank you" through our tears as we passed by each veteran.  It was pretty incredible to be in DC on Memorial Day weekend and have all the visible reminders around us to remember that we are "the land of the free because of the brave."

We found New Guinea which is where my Papaw Porter served. We shed a few tears here as well!  Miss him so much!!!  He would have loved to hear EK tell him all about her time in DC.

EK's top priority was seeing the White House. A couple of minutes after taking this picture, the secret service officers made everyone leave the area and they began to block off all the streets. We didn't think much about it until we got back on our bus at the nearby stop and then waited and waited because police were in the road. A few minutes later, we saw a line of black limos, SUVs and police cars drive by us and on to the White House property. Who knows who it actually was, but EK is fairly certain it was someone from the president's family.

All that walking and touring made us hungry, so we grabbed a late lunch. EK said, "look, I made the Washington Monument and all the flags with my French fries!" Bless her little heart.
After that, we hopped back on the metro and road back to our hotel to get our rental car and head to Jordan and Ross' house!  We loved getting to see the city through EK's eyes!  Obviously, there were plenty of places and things that we missed, but I think she was quite pleased with her first visit!
